How Spiritual Growth Can Improve Your Mental Health

Updated: Dec 27, 2021

Improve Your Mental Health

As a clinical psychologist, I regularly work with clients from all walks of life dealing with mental health issues. During therapy, the topic of spirituality is sometimes brought up, and some of them say they no longer go to church or feel such an intimate connection with what they believe in.

If you’re curious about how to grow spiritually, it’s important to acknowledge that spirituality does not necessarily relate to religion. It is a sense of connection to something bigger than yourself; it helps you understand how you interpret the world around you and the meaning of life. As it promotes healthy spiritual practices, it positively influences your mental health. If you’re interested in using spiritual growth practices to improve your life, here are some suggestions:

Practise Mindfulness

Mindfulness is the state of being conscious and aware of what is happening both within and around you. Practicing this mindset helps you stay positive, prevent obsessing over potential problems and lead a meaningful life. As you learn to regulate your emotions in this manner, you can minimize the risk of experiencing stress, anxiety, and depression.

Mindfulness can be practiced in both formal and informal ways. Formal mindfulness meditation can involve a focus on the breath and the 5 senses. Another way to practice mindfulness is to focus on one activity at a time. For example, you can focus on the act of walking, working, or simply cleaning. By focusing on mindfulness, over time, you’ll notice that you feel more peaceful and content.

Keep a Gratitude Journal

It’s easy to dwell on negative emotions or obsess over negative thoughts if you’re not intentional in being aware of what is working in your life. One way to focus on your blessings is to keep a gratitude journal. Make it a habit to list down a few things you are grateful for each day. This will let you realize all of the good things in your life and help you become optimistic and content.

Create Your Very Own Safe Space

Many people are still having trouble coping with the negative effects of the pandemic, and one of these is not being able to go out as freely as possible due to the fear of the virus. Feeling this way is understandable and normal.

While you can’t always control the world around you, you are still in charge of your environment at home. Because of this, nurture a peaceful haven in your house that allows you to ease your worries, let go of stress, and simply unwind. This might be a reading nook, a spot in the dining room where you burn incense and meditate, or a corner of your yard filled with colourful flowers.

Make Peace with Your Inner Voice

They say your inner voice can be your worst enemy. While that little voice in your head throws the harshest criticisms on you, it can become your biggest ally and friend with some practice. The key here is to make peace with it. For instance, if it says you aren’t good enough, consider taking this as an opportunity to determine why you feel that way. See if you can use your negative thinking habits to strengthen yourself.

Conclusion

Spirituality has the power to change your life for the better. As you follow these suggestions, you can take steps toward enhancing your well-being. Best of all, you give yourself a chance to become empowered, focus on your personal growth, and renew a sense of belongingness in the world.
